Mistral AI hiring 161 staff in Europe with salaries up to €165K

Mistral AI has 161 open roles in Europe. The salaries are real. The entity gap is real. Here is what Portugal-based candidates need to know.

Mistral AI hiring 161 staff in Europe with salaries up to €165K

Mistral AI is the most-funded AI lab in Europe. It has 161 open roles right now. Portugal is not in any of them.

The Paris-based company raised $3.1 billion, hit a $14 billion valuation, and is spending $830 million to build a data center near Paris. The hiring surge follows. But for candidates based in Lisbon, the story is identical to GitLab: no Portugal entity, no approved remote jurisdiction, and no path in without asking explicitly.

What is actually open

Lever shows 161 open roles as of May 2026. Three-quarters are in Paris. The full city breakdown: Paris (103 roles), London (47), Amsterdam (11), Singapore (11), Marseille (8), Munich (6), Berlin (6), Lausanne (5), Warsaw (4), Zurich (4), Madrid (3), Brussels (2), Stockholm (1).

The role mix is technical. Research and Engineering account for roughly 70 positions. Sales and Solutions are scaling across EMEA. The March 2026 debt raise for a Paris data center explains the on-site concentration: they are physically building infrastructure, which requires people in the building.

Research roles span machine learning engineering, robotics, AI science, data infrastructure, and applied science. Most are hybrid in Paris or London, with a handful in Warsaw and Zurich. Engineering covers backend, frontend, DevEx, HPC, SRE, and cybersecurity. Product and design are concentrated in Paris and London.

The remote trap

Mistral lists "Remote" as a work type on several postings. That word does not mean what most candidates assume.

Every remote role explicitly specifies an approved city list. The backend engineering role (Golang) reads: Remote, available in Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, London, and Luxembourg. The Systems Engineer HPC role covers Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Lausanne, and Madrid. The Research Platform Engineer role is remote for Paris and London only.

Portugal is absent from every single list. So is Ireland. So is Italy.

Out of 161 roles, exactly five are explicitly remote in the EU. The other 156 require physical presence in Paris or London. That is what "EU-first AI lab" means on paper versus in practice.

What they pay

Mistral does not publish salary ranges on its job postings. Candidates go into every screen with no published benchmark to anchor against.

Levels.fyi has verified data as of May 2026. Software engineers in France earn between €108,000 at L1 and €142,000 at L3 base. Median total compensation across all reported roles is $164,555. The highest reported figure is a US-based Solution Architect at $326,000.

All of these numbers clear Portugal's D8 visa income threshold by a wide margin. The D8 requires €3,480 per month. The lowest reported total compensation at Mistral is $91,000, which translates to roughly €7,000 per month. There is no engineering role at Mistral that does not qualify for D8. That matters if you are considering relocation to Paris or London while retaining Portuguese tax residency.

Benefits in France are strong. Healthcare through Alan Blue covers employees and their families at 100%. Meal vouchers, a Gymlib premium subscription, and a 600-euro annual transport allowance are included. The UK package adds a 5% pension match and premium dental. Both are competitive for European tech.

The equity question

French startup equity at Mistral comes as BSPCE. These are startup warrants with favorable tax treatment in France. Not standard stock options, not RSUs.

Mistral does not publish grant sizes, strike prices, or vesting terms publicly. What is confirmed: vesting runs four years, with 25% releasing at the end of year one and the remainder vesting monthly over years two through four.

The company is valued at $14 billion and grew ARR from $20 million to $400 million in a single year. That equity is not hypothetical. But you must negotiate the terms in writing during the offer stage. Get the grant size, the current valuation basis, and the conditions for any secondary liquidity before you sign. "Competitive equity package" without specifics is not a data point.

Why the urgency is real

Mistral went from $20 million in ARR to $400 million in one year. The company reported $200 million in revenue for 2025 and CEO Arthur Mensch said publicly it is on track to exceed €1 billion by end of 2026.

In March 2026, Mistral borrowed $830 million specifically to build a data center near Paris. That is infrastructure capital, not runway. It also explains the hiring bias: 103 of 161 roles are in Paris, and most of the engineering positions require on-site presence. The data center needs people in the building.

The company has not had layoffs since founding in 2023. With €2.8 billion raised and a growing enterprise customer base including partnerships with ASML and Nvidia, the stability picture is different from most European AI labs.

If you are based in Portugal

There is no Mistral legal entity in Portugal. Confirmed entities cover France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. For roles in Amsterdam, Berlin, or Madrid, employment is likely through an Employer of Record, which means the full French or UK benefits package is not available to you.

The practical paths for Portugal-based candidates:

Apply to one of the five explicitly remote EU roles (cloud backend, SRE, systems engineering, research platform) and in the first HR screen, ask directly whether Portugal can be added as an approved remote location or whether the company uses an EOR for candidates there. Some companies add countries for the right candidate. Ask before assuming the answer is no.

If the company cannot accommodate Portugal, Madrid or Barcelona are the nearest cities that already appear in Mistral's remote-eligible lists. Both are closer to Lisbon than Paris or London.

If you need an EOR to work for an EU company that has no Portugal entity, Deel and Oyster both operate in Portugal and have experience navigating this setup for tech hires.

If full relocation to Paris works, the French CDI contract with Alan Blue healthcare and BSPCE equity is the cleanest path. The D8 income threshold is not a barrier at any Mistral engineering level.

The interview process

Glassdoor data shows Mistral's hiring process averages 15 days from application to offer. That is fast for the technical depth involved.

The process runs six stages: an HR screen, a team lead screen, a business case, a technical interview focused on LLM architecture and system design, a take-home project with a panel presentation, and a final culture fit conversation. Around 30% of candidates report a separate skills test.

Prepare specifically for LLM infrastructure questions and distributed systems design. The take-home is treated as real work. Clear your schedule for two weeks, anchor your rate to Levels.fyi data before the first call, and ask the recruiter for formal salary bands in the first conversation, not after the offer.

Common traps

  • Assuming "remote" means location-flexible. It does not. Remote at Mistral means remote within a specific approved city list. Portugal is not on any of them. Confirm your location before progressing past the first screen.
  • Going in without a rate anchored. No ranges are published. Use Levels.fyi data for your level and function. State a specific number early. Vague negotiation at a company with no transparency is how you leave money on the table.
  • Treating BSPCE as a bonus. At $14 billion valuation and $400 million ARR, this equity is material. Get the grant size, vesting schedule, and secondary liquidity conditions in writing before signing.
  • Assuming visa sponsorship. Sponsorship is not mentioned on any job posting. Ask in the first recruiter call.
  • Ignoring the data center context. The $830 million Paris data center raise means on-site Paris engineering roles will dominate Mistral's hiring for the next two years. If you are not open to Paris, filter accordingly before applying.

Bottom line

Apply if you want the highest-profile technical role in European AI and you are willing to be in Paris, London, or one of the five explicitly remote EU locations. The salary is competitive. The equity is real. The revenue trajectory makes this one of the few EU AI labs where the upside is not purely speculative.

If you are based in Portugal with no plan to relocate, the entity gap applies here exactly as it does at GitLab. Ask about an exception or an EOR arrangement in the first recruiter call. Do not wait until the offer stage.

FAQ

Can I work remotely from Portugal for Mistral AI?

Not through any standard posting. Portugal does not appear in any of Mistral's approved remote city lists, and the company has no confirmed legal entity there. In the first recruiter call, ask directly whether Portugal can be added as an approved remote jurisdiction or whether an EOR arrangement is possible.

Does Mistral AI sponsor visas?

Visa sponsorship is not stated on any of the 161 current job postings. For Paris roles, the French Tech Visa is a realistic option for senior technical hires but must be confirmed with the recruiter. For London roles, confirm whether Mistral's UK entity holds a Skilled Worker sponsor licence before progressing in the process.
